Editorial. This week in Bali.

The storm on Tuesday night came out of nowhere and we saw it wreak havoc all over town – near the rivers, in any case. However, after a few weeks of dry weather it came as no surprise to many that the rivers and drains were clogged and blocked. Ironically, boss of Sungai Watch, Gary Bencheghib posted a story just the very day before the storm saying that there appeared to be more trash in the rivers than ever before – especially, since the Bali Governor stated people should take care of the their own organic waste. This directive appeared to give the green light to dump any trash you want in the local rivers and tributaries, surmised Gary in the post, and on Tuesday we all saw the fruits of that decision, or lack of it, with these unprecedented floods. Others are claiming the continual building encroachment on the banks of the rivers also plays a part, but no matter where the blockage comes from, in the end, if the water has nowhere to go it will rise and flow faster, which is a recipe for disaster. Good drainage is so important on this island and needs to be well thought out at all times. Just look at the Subak irrigation system. One would imagine that the rivers and drainage systems would be the government’s responsibility and I would hazzard to say again incinerating the trash is a good way forward.

Besides some rivers and roads that are still being cleared and repaired, and some crazy traffic jams in those areas, everything is now more or less back to normal.  However, some people have lost almost everything and there are fund raisers going on right now for them. Search ‘fund raising floods Bali’ for some more info. BIWA is also a good choice

Just a word on last weekend, the full moon and big parties in general. If there is a big show, with a big minimum alcohol spend on tables, the venue should have some kind of medic or rest area ready for casulties during the night. Some venues do, others don’t. In a party situation anything can happen and often does. We should always be prepared.

Have a good weekend you all!
